Well, we’ve hit that time again. The weather has been fantastic. Been getting off for lots of camping trips with the family in the sun and enjoying the summer holidays. But the fishing has hit that mid summer point when the water is too warm and the fish go off the feed.
I’ve been twice over the last few weeks. The first time there were lots of fish swimming in the margins but nothing I threw at them seemed tempting. It was still a pleasant afternoon by the water though.
Then last week I went over for an afternoon and didn’t even see the faintest glimmer of silver anywhere on the lake. With the weather we’ve had the fish must be lying on the bottom trying to keep cool…and I don’t blame them! I had 36˚c in my office the other day which was just unbearable!
The magazines always have tips on how to beat the summer heat but at the end of the day if the waters too warm the fish won’t feed.
So what to do in these summer months? Do you drive wider afield and try the big reservoirs where the bigger volume of water keeps things cooler? Or do you give up for a few weeks and wait for the weather to cool down in September? I think I may try both with a trip to Farmoor and Bewl and some days away from the water on another vintage hifi speaker restoration project.
If you have any tips for summer fishing, especially at Millan, then do leave some comments.
Hi , I’m a member at Millan and gave up fishing it in mid July , will start again early October .
They just don’t want to feed when its very hot but I know some members are more successful than me in the hot weather . It is very frustrating to watch dozens of lovely trout swim past a favourite fly and ignore it !
I did ok at the start of August but then it got very hot. I haven’t been back since but will probably go back up and have a look again this week. Hopefully the longer nights and a drop in day time temps will have helped and the fish will be on the fry. Fingers crossed!
